Warning: contains some fairly sophomoric references to female body parts and other things that might annoy or offend adults. The content, however, is spot on.

I saw this a couple of weeks back on Digg and almost posted about it myself. I particularly was struck by the point that when you get an audience chanting (“USA! USA!”) they can’t actually do any mental evaluation of the BS they’re being fed.
It shuts the frontal cortex right down, especially if the chant is loud. The article also pointed out that this is the function of mantras and repetitive prayer, which I have found to be the case in my own practice. I think it even applies to counting breaths. There have been times when I just counted beads and found it very relaxing.
